E64 - Transmigration and Isekai (Episode 1 of 2) - "I love relationships that are built on lies."

Get ready for some hot takes from your SLL girlies! In the first of two episodes, we’re joined by the host of the Tea and Soju Podcast and friend of the show, Liliana, to talk all things transmigration and isekai. Don’t know what that means? We’ve got you covered! We start out by identifying the defining features of these culturally specific genres and name drop some of our favorite examples. We also debate the difference–if there is one–between isekai and portal fantasy, in which Ayanni defini

E63 - Katabasis, Spoiler Filled (Episode 3 of 3) - "Grimes' Crimes"

The final installment of our deep dive into R. F. Kuang’s Katabasis is finally here!! Even three episodes in, we somehow still have more to say about this dark academic journey to hell. Corinne flexes her academic muscles in a conversation about consent in fantasy (and academic reality). Then we wrap up by turning to the book’s ending and our feelings about Alice and Peter's relationship. As a bit of a content warning, Katabasis deals with abuse and suicidal ideation. E62 - Katabasis, Spoiler Filled (Episode 2 of 3) - "She is a character (derogatory)"

Episode two of our Katabasis deep dive is finally here! We also consider Kuang’s construction of hell as a university–but with the pretty clear argument that salvation is definitely not a dissertation. As a bit of a content warning, Katabasis deals with abuse and suicidal ideat

Reviews

Fun and Thoughtful
Corinne and Ayanni are not only gifted scholars in their pop culture fields, but also SO fun to listen to. They explain shows and deep theoretical concepts in the same digestible ways, bringing an added depth to great conversations about our favorite trash (and not-so-trash) media. Nobody else gets this mix to have quite so much fun flavor as these two!
Excellent Analysis and Engaging Personalities!!
I love these two and their both deep and accessible analyses on a WIDE VARIETY of media. While they break down the many different aspects of each of these shows and how and what their relationships say about the core themes of the show they never go too deep to lose the audience. It’s so lovely and their fun and inclusive personalities are infectious! Definitely a must listen to! Please try them out!
Pop culture analysis that’s both smart & fun
Exactly what the title of this review says. I came for the deep dives into K-drama and stayed for everything else. The Tamora Pierce episode is /everything/ if those were your foundational fantasy texts (as they were for me). 10/10 would recommend!
